OTTAWA- Baseball Canada is pleased to announce the names of 15 players that will represent Canada in a U20 women’s international baseball tournament in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from June 1-5.
In addition to Team Canada, national teams from Mexico, Cuba and host Dominican Republic are confirmed for the event.
Team Canada will be under the guidance of longtime Women’s National Team Manager André Lachance, while Women’s National Team coaches Sheen Bromley, Scott Mackenzie and Patricia Landry will also be on the staff.
Three players named to the roster (Emma Carr, Claire Eccles and Heather Healey) have represented Canada at international competitions in the past while the 12 other players named to the roster will be playing for Canada at an international competition for the first time.
“The opportunity to play in international competition at a young age will be an invaluable experience for our team as we’re afforded the chance to grow our National Team program at this event,” said Lachance. “The fact that we can give our athletes this type of international baseball experience is nothing but positive for our Women’s National Team program as a whole.”
Coming off a silver medal performance at last summer’s Pan Am Games in Toronto, the Women’s National Team program shifts it focus in 2016 to the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup that will be held in Gijang City, South Korea from September 3-11. Canada will be looking to improve on their fourth place finish from the last time a World Cup event was held in 2014.
“With some players moving on from baseball there will be opportunities for other players to earn a spot on the National Team beginning later this summer,” added Lachance. “With this event in the Dominican Republic and through our Girls Baseball Development Camp that takes place each winter in Cuba, our program is now able to provide opportunities for players to experience the game on an international level and grow as baseball players.”
