Brewers blank juniors in second half of doubleheader

San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic-Zach Pop (Brampton, ON) and JP Stevenson (Hunter River, PE) combined to limit the Milwaukee Brewers Dominican prospects to only three hits, but the Brewers scored runs when they needed to and held the Junior National Team off the scoreboard to earn a 3-0 victory.

The loss was the second of the day for the juniors as they dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker against the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays in the morning.

Offensively, the Brewers held the juniors to only three hits with singles from Mitch Robinson (Surrey, BC) and Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON), while Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) whacked a double to the gap in right-centre with two out in the fourth but was left stranded.

In the sixth, three consecutive walks gave the juniors the bases loaded with nobody out, but a ground ball to the third baseman was thrown home for the force out and the catcher immediately returned the throw to the third baseman who applied the tag to a sliding Mitch Bigras (Sarnia, ON). A fielder’s choice then forced Andrew Yerzy (North York, ON) out at second base and the Brewers were out of the inning unscathed.

After giving up a run on a walk, two wild-pitches and groundout in the second inning, JNT starter Zach Pop faced only seven batters combined in the third and fourth before he gave-up a one-out solo home run in fifth to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.

Pop ended his outing throwing 5 innings giving up 2 runs, while allowing only one hit and two walks to go along with two strikeouts.

Reliever JP Stevenson came into the game in the sixth and worked a perfect inning before allowing a leadoff single in the seventh that came around to score on a double.

Stevenson tossed three innings allowing one run, two hits, while fanning two batters.
