Day 1 Comes To A Close at Bantam Events

Ottawa, ON – Both bantam events were filled with games to open Day 1 and there was no shortage of star power.  Each team made an impression and it will make for an interesting next couple of days.

The following is recap of the result from today’s afternoon and evening games.

15U Bantam Boys

Québec 7  Alberta 5

After scoring the game’s first seven runs, Québec was able to thwart a comeback attempt from Alberta to win the game by two runs.  Québec was able to generate runs through their entire lineup, but were led by their leadoff hitter Isaac Deveaux (Montréal, QC) who was a perfect 3/3 at the plate with three runs scored.  Number six hitter Ariel Lopez (Montréal, QC) also had two hits and a RBI.

Ontario 4  British Columbia 2

The bottom of Team Ontario’s lineup did all the damage as they were able to get past BC by a score of 4-2. Rashad Collymore (Mississauga, ON) and Zachary Fascia (Brampton, ON) both drove in a run while Luke Van Rycheghem (Kent Bridge, ON) pitched three and one-third scoreless innings to earn the win.

Newfoundland and Labrador 2  Manitoba 1

Colin Hunt (Mount Pearl, NL) was magical on this night, going all seven innings and only allowing two hits to help his team to victory.  It wasn’t all that easy for his offense, however, as they used their last at bat to win in walk-off fashion.  Counterpart Dayton Heino (Minnedosa, MB) was also very good on the mound, striking out nine over six innings in the no-decision.

Nova Scotia 10  Prince Edward Island 0

Nova Scotia was able to capitalize on some questionable defense from Prince Edward to cruise to the 10-0 victory.  Jake Lonar (Coldbrook, NS) ran up some two’s by picking up two hits, two RBI and scoring two runs while Chandler Corney (Halifax, NS) struck out seven en route to picking up the win.

New Brunswick 17  Saskatchewan 8

New Brunswick put seven runs across the plate before Saskatchewan had an at-bat, and they never looked back as they put another win in the win column.  Eight different players had at least one RBI, including three from leadoff hitter Declan Buckle (Dieppe, NB).  Eight different Saskatchewan players registered a hit in the defeat.

Québec 9  Vaughan 1

After taking an early 1-0 lead, host Vaughan stumbled and started their tournament on the wrong foot as Québec defeated them by a 9-1 score.  Erick-David Lantigua (Boischatel, QC) had two extra-base hits and drove in two runs while Justin Ryan (Gatineau, QC) started the game to pick up the win.

Ontario 8  Alberta 1

After scoring three runs in the first inning, Ontario would gradually build their lead throughout the game and come out with the win.  Luke Van Rycheghem (Kent Bridge, ON) was dominant at the plate, picking up three RBI to go along with three hits in three at-bats.  Leadoff hitter Connor May (Oshawa, ON) was able to score on three separate occasions.

16U Bantam Girls Invitational

British Columbia 7  Newfoundland and Labrador 3

Taylor Knight (North Vancouver, BC) was brilliant on the mound by throwing four hitless innings to pick up the win.  On offense, Courtney Desjardins (Kelowna, BC) smacked three hits while leadoff hitter Lora Miki (Kelowna, BC) scored twice.  Dayle Prowse (St. John’s NL) picked up a RBI for her squad.

Ontario 21  Manitoba 10

Down 9-3 heading into the fourth inning, Ontario would club out eighteen runs over the next three innings to win the 21-10 slugfest.  Eight different players picked up RBI’s, including a team-leading four from Kayla Misiuda (Brantford, ON).  Amanda Mathae (Winnipeg, MB) reached base twice and also picked up two RBI in the tough loss.

British Columbia 2  Nova Scotia 1

Thanks to a pair of pitchers, Team BC was able to squeak past Nova Scotia by a very close 2-1 count.  Claire Eccles (White Rock, BC) and Lora Miki (Kelowna, BC) combined for thirteen strikeouts and gave up only three hits.  Eccles was also the hero at the plate with the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Québec 10 Alberta 0

In the final game of the day, Québec was able to easily get by Alberta and win in convincing fashion by a score of 10-0.  Marguerite Cecil (Ste-Julie, QC) was a perfect 3/3 at the plate while Veronique Mathieu (St-Pierre-de-Ile-d’Orléans, QC) was also perfect and drove in two runs.
