DQ® 13U National Atlantic Championship: First day of competition

Ottawa, ON – Games got underway in Mount Pearl, NL where the DQ® 13U National Atlantic Championship is being held this year. A total of 8 games were played throughout the day as teams looked to get a jump on the competition.

Here’s a look at some of the action:

St. John’s 11 Riverview 10

Brett Hudson (Torbay, NL) went 3 for 5 with a double and 5 RBIs to lead the offense in the win while Riverview’s Eli Barnett (Riverview, NB) was dominant in the batter’s box despite the loss going 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Closer Dylan Morgan (St. John’s, NL) picked up the win striking out 3 over the final 2 innings.

Capital District 9 Tri-County 0

Capital District’s pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts in the 1-hit shutout. Starter Cody Barrett (Charlottetown, PE) struck out 6 over 2.1 hitless innings while reliever Alex Graham (Charlottetown, PE) struck out 6 over 3 hitless innings. Jacob Squires (Charlottetown, PE) went 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and 4 RBIs to lead the offense.

Hammonds Plains 7 Mid-Isle 5

Hammonds Plains started off strong with a 4-run inning in the bottom of the first thanks to a big 3-run home run of the bat of Ryan Fitzgerald (Hammonds Plains, NS). TJ Norris (Prospect, NS) added some run support later on with a 2-run double in the 3rd. Colton McLaren (Halifax, NS) struck out 6 over 3.2 innings of relief work to help his team hold the lead until the end.

Port City 8 Mount Pearl 7

Port City managed to hang on for win despite a late surge by host Mount Pearl including a 5-run inning in the 6th. Starting pitcher Brett Baxter (Saint John, NB) was an important piece in his team’s success shutting out the opposition in the first 3 innings while striking out 7. Ryan Trentowsky (Saint John, NB) went 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and 2 RBIs.

St. John’s 11 Tri-County 7

St. John’s 8 runs in the first inning was enough to secure the win in this one. Nathan Nanayakkara (St. John’s, NL) was perfect at the plate going 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Kadon Murray (Grand Falls Windsor, NL) provided some run support as well with a 3-run home run in the first inning.

Capital District 4 Riverview 3

With 5 of the 7 runs for both teams coming across to score in the 1st, this one became a pitcher’s duel as the game went on. Reliever Landon Gallant (Summerside, PE) struck out 3 over 3 shutout innings to earn the win for his club. Michael McRae (Tignish, PE) was perfect at the plate going 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.

Hammonds Plains 13 Mount Pearl 1

Hammonds Plains pulled away in this one thanks to a couple of 5-run innings. Starting pitcher Ryan Trenholm (Hammonds Plains, NS) earned the win striking out 4 over 4.1 innings while holding Mount Pearl to 1 run on 4 hits. TJ Norris (Prospect, NS) went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored while teammate Jake Furlong (Hammonds Plains, NS) doubled and tripled in the win.

Mid-Isle 15 Port City 4

Starting pitcher Jackson Sherren (Cornwall, PE) struck out 8 over 5.1 innings to help Mid-Isle to the decisive win over Port City. Carson MacKay (Kensington, PE) and Joshua Smith (Warren Grove, PE) both homered in the win and provided the bulk of the offensive production. MacKay went 2 for 5 with 5 RBIs and 2 runs scored while Smith went 3 for 5 with 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
