Fergie Jenkins to Receive Order of Canada

It has taken 28 years, but Canadian baseball legend Ferguson Jenkins will finally receive his Order of Canada insignia next month.

Jenkins' charity foundation announced yesterday that he would receive the insignia during a May 4 ceremony in Ottawa.

The 63-year-old native of Chatham, Ontario, was invested as a member of the Order of Canada in late 1979 but didn't receive the insignia due to availability and scheduling issues.

Jenkins played 19 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.  He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York and of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys, Ontario.  He has a career mark of 284-226 with an ERA of 3.34 in 664 games (594 starts) and 267 complete games with 49 shutouts.
