National Championships: August 26th Wrap

OTTAWA- BC only gave up one hit and ended up beating Saskatchewan 12-1 in a mercy shortened game at the Bantam Girls championship in Richmond, BC. In the 2nd inning Avery Hutton (North Vancouver, BC) highlighted an eleven run outburst when she singled to bring home two runs. Sheridan Takahara (Maple Ridge, BC) also had a two run single in the inning. On the mound, Maryse Garcia (Surrey, BC) was dominant in picking up the win, allowing only one hit and striking out six.

Ranya Miller (Calgary, AB) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored as Alberta defeated Richmond 14-4 in a mercy rule shortened game. Other scores had Ontario edging Québec 6-5.

Bantam Boys

Québec used a ten run 3rd inning en-route to a 17-6 drubbing over PEI. Moises Perez (Lasalle, QC) was once again a force at the plate as he was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Up until that inning PEI held a 6-2 lead thanks to two runs in the 1st inning and four more runs in the 2nd. Tyler Arsenault (Summerside, PEI) had a two run single to score both runs in the 1st inning. Andrew Jim Brien (Montréal, QC) was solid on the mound for Québec as he pitched all five innings and struck out ten batters.

Josh Hillis (Calgary, AB) had a three RBI as he hit a bases clearing triple in the 5th inning as Alberta outlasted New Brunswick 10-7.

Ontario thumped Nova Scotia 14-1 in a game that saw Toby Handley (Whitby, ON) go 2-for-3 with three RBI. Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) got the win and struck out four.

Vaughan picked up their second win of the day as they pounded Saskatchewan 12-2. Owen Spiwak (Mississauga, ON) led the offence going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Three Vaughan pitchers combined to one hit Saskatchewan.

In other scores, BC trounced Newfoundland 14-4 and New Brunswick cruised to 16-6 mercy win over PEI.

Senior Men

Derek Wilson (Fredericton, NB) hit two homeruns for New Brunswick, but it wasn’t enough as Nova Scotia got by their Atlantic rivals 10-6 at the Senior championship in Dartmouth, NS. Barrett Bellefonatine (Halifax, NS) threw six solid innings, giving up three runs while striking out six batters. Nova Scotia took command of the game in the 5th when they scored five runs with three coming off the bat of Jay Turple (Halifax, NS) who doubled with the bases loaded. New Brunswick tried to mount a comeback in the 7th inning as they scored three runs but were unable to get any closer after Jeremy Turgeon (Fredericton, NB) was caught stealing to end the game.

Jason Chatwood (Red Deer, AB) homered and had two RBI as Red Deer (Alberta-1) beat up on Ilderton (Onatrio-1) by a score of 7-2.

John Saunders (Chatham, NB) had two hits and two RBI as New Brunswick avenged for their earlier loss in the day, with an 8-0 whipping of BC.

Dartmouth scored a run in each of the 5th and 6th innings to break a 2-2 tie as they hung on to defeat Windsor (Onatrio-2) by a score of 4-2. Jason Bailey (Dartmouth, NS) pitched a complete game and struck out five.

Another score to pass along had defending champ Fort Saskatchewan (Alberta-2) drop a 5-4 decision to Manitoba.
