Notebook: Junior National Team Spring Training

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – The Junior National Team program is currently holding a spring training camp at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, the spring training home of the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals.

The squad is holding daily workouts and playing a twelve game schedule including six games against prospect squads from the Astros’ and Nationals’ organizations.

APRIL 23  | Canada Red 5, Canada Grey 4

The Junior National Team put the finishing touches on spring training with Canada Red scoring a 5-4 decision over Canada Grey in the final intrasquad match-up.

A two run fourth inning gave Canada Red the lead and they rode some strong pitching from the likes of Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON), Hudson White (St. John’s, NL) and Jack Wheatley (Calgary, AB) to victory.

Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, NS) and Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) each had two hits and scored a run for Red while Sam White (Aurora, ON) knocked in a pair of runs for Grey.

Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) and Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) both had scoreless outings for Canada Grey.

APRIL 22 | Canada 2, Houston Astros 9

Jaco Zibin (Langley, BC) and Zak Szabo (Whitby, ON) each turned in scoreless outings on the mound, but it wasn’t enough as the Junior National Team dropped a 9-2 decision to the Houston Astros prospects.

Zibin went three innings without allowing a hit, walked three and struck out six while Szabo scatted three hits and two walks with one strikeout over two innings of work.

Parker Burgess (Douro Dummer, ON) also worked two frames and didn’t allow an earned run with three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Junior National Team had just one hit with Jakob Poturnak (Vancouver, BC) leading off the top of the seventh with a base hit to right field.

The juniors opened the scoring in the fourth loading the bases on a pair of hit batters and walk before a fielder’s choice and wild pitch saw two runs score.

The Astros were quick to respond scoring nine times over the next three innings with Chase Marshall (White Rock, BC) on the mound where they took advantage of four hits and four walks. Marshall recorded one strikeout over 1.2 innings.

APRIL 21 | Canada 0, Washington Nationals 2

The Junior Nationals Team was limited to just three hits while the Washington Nationals prospects scored two early runs to come away with a 2-0 victory.

The Nats used a pair of hits and a walk off starting pitcher Jérémy Pilon (Valleyfield, QC) to load the bases in the bottom half of the second that led to a run coming in on a fielder’s choice before adding a run on a wild pitch in the third.

Pilon was tagged with just one earned run and had a pair of strikeouts over three innings of work.

The string of solid pitching continued with Carson Lumley (London, ON) and Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) working two scoreless innings each while Conor Pote (Sherwood Park, AB) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) had two of the Junior National Team’s three hits with Keegan O’Hearn (Oshawa, ON) recording the other.

APRIL 20 | Canada 2, Houston Astros 13

A group of Houston Astros prospects took advantage of four Junior National Team errors and pounded out 12 hits en route to a 13-2 win.

Trailing by nine runs in the seventh Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, NS) got the juniors on the board with a line drive double to centre that brought in Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) and Joshua Jones (Blainville, QC).

Doucette finished 2-for-3 while Pinkney went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

On the mound, Charles-Olivier Cyr (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) tossed two innings and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

APRIL 19 | Canada 4, Washington Nationals 2

The Junior National Team rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead over a group of Washington Nationals prospects and hung on to take home a 4-2 victory.

Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON) lined a single to right field to score Deiten Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) with the tying run before Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) lofted a fly ball to right to score Cole Leclair (Toronto, ON) with the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly.

Reece Usselman (Langley, BC), Matteo Pare (LaSalle, ON), Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON) and Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) pitched for the Junior National Team limiting the Nationals to two runs and seven hits.

Jimmy Dionne (Saint-Augustin de Desmaures, QC) had two hits and a walk to reach base in all three of his plate appearances as the juniors collected seven hits on the afternoon.

APRIL 18 | Canada 0, Houston Astros 1 (4 innings)

With the Junior National Team and a prospects squad from the Houston Astros locked into a close ballgame, Mother Nature stepped in as a thunderstorm hit the Palm Beach area causing a cancellation of the remainder of the game.

A two-out single in the second inning had given the Astros a 1-0 lead.

Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (St-Pie, QC) worked three solid innings on the mound giving up the one run on one hit and two walks while striking out four batters.

Carson Latimer (delta, BC) took over to start the bottom of the fourth and recorded two outs including a strikeout and walked a batter before the umpires sent the teams off the field.

Sam Shaw (Victoria, BC) doubled to left with two out in the fourth for the lone Junior National Team hit.

APRIL 17 | Canada 5, Ft. Lauderdale Stars 9

An early deficit and a late charge only to fall short as the Junior National Team fell 9-5 to the Fort Lauderdale Stars in a 10 inning contest.

Once again, the Stars provided all of the pitching in the contest with the juniors slated to play five pro games and one intrasquad contest over the next six days of camp.

Down by six runs in the sixth, Jack Wheatley (Calgary, AB) got the Junior National Team on the board doubling in two runs before coming around to score on an error.

Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON) led off the bottom of the eighth with a double before scampering home on a wild pitch while Sam White (Aurora, ON) drove in Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) on a single to centre to round out the Junior National Team scoring on the afternoon.

APRIL 16 | Canada 0, Washington Nationals 1

A leadoff walk in the fourth inning came around to score on a two out single to left field giving the Washington Nationals prospects all of the offence they would need for a 1-0 victory.

Four Junior National Team pitchers held the Nats to just five hits on the game including Jacob Zibin (Langley, BC) who tossed three scoreless innings and Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, ON) who kept the Nats scoreless over two frames with four strikeouts.

Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC) allowed one run one hit and three walks with two strikeouts over two innings pitched while Zak Szabo (Whitby, ON) threw one inning.

Offensively, Max Hartman (St. Albert, AB) collected two of the Junior National Team’s three hits while Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) had the other.

APRIL 16 | Canada Red 10, Canada Grey 4

The second half of the doubleheader saw Canada Red score a 10-4 win over Canada Grey with Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) coming up with a double and RBI while Cole Leclair (Toronto, ON) doubled and scored a run.

Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) spun two scoreless innings for Grey allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out two batters.

Liam Adamson (London, ON) tossed three innings for Red without allowing an earned run while surrendering two hits to go along with one strikeout.

APRIL 15 | Scheduled intersquad game was rained out and will be made up on April 16th following the game against the Washington Nationals prospects.

APRIL 14 | Canada 8, Ft. Lauderdale Stars 8 GAME ONE

*Note: The Stars provided all of the pitching for both teams in both games of the doubleheader.

Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) belted a two run homer off the batter’s eye in centerfield in the fifth inning as part of a 3-for-3 game at the plate while Dylan O’Rae (Sarnia, ON) had three hits including a double with two RBI and a stolen base as the Junior National Team played the Fort Lauderdale Stars to an 8-8 tie

The game featured three recent Junior National Team alums with Nate Ochoa (Burlington, ON), who belted a fifth inning grand slam, and Caleb Clark (Orillia, ON) suiting up for the Stars while Micah Bucknam (Abbottsford, BC) toed the rubber for the juniors.

APRIL 14 | Canada 10, Ft. Lauderdale Stars 7 GAME TWO

Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON), Sam Shaw (Victoria, BC) and Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) each drove in two runs while Joshua Jones (Blainville, QC) smacked a two run homer as the Junior National Team beat the Fort Lauderdale Stars, 10-7. 

With the Stars taking an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a three run homer, the juniors got two in the home half of the inning with Shaw scoring on a passed ball while Pinkney drove in a run on a RBI single up the middle.

With two out and two runners on in the second, Cameron Chee-Aloy doubled to left field to plate two before Sam Shaw followed with a single up the middle to score one.

After the Stars took a one run leading after scoring four in the fifth, Shaw collected his second RBI of the game with a double to centre and scampered home on a wild pitch with the go ahead run.

Jones put the finishing touches on the win with a two run homer to left in the sixth inning.

APRIL 13 | Canada RED 8, Canada Grey 1

Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) tossed three no hit innings and Sam Shaw (Victoria, BC) put an exclamation point on for his side with a late home run to lead Canada Red to an 8-1 win over Canada Grey on day one of Junior National Team spring training.

Usselman was on the mound for one run, although unearned, and struck out four batters on 39 pitches as Canada Red built a 4-1 lead after three innings.

Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON) and Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) both tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits with Pineau fanning one batter while Thomas recorded five strikeouts. 

Shaw, Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) and Joshua Jones (Blainville, QC) had two hits each as Canada Red recorded ten hits while Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) had two hits including a double for Canada Grey.
