BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Canada won their first game of the WBSC Americas Pan Am Qualifier against Panama, 6-5, in extra innings.
The Canadians came out on top despite being outhit 7-5 in a back-and-forth battle. When it mattered, however, the Canadians came through scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning (a regulation game is seven innings) while holding off Panama in the bottom half to secure the victory.
Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) set the tone for the Canadian offence with two hits over his three at bats, including a two-run home run in the first inning to give Canada the early lead. Jordan Procyshen (Calgary, AB) also smashed a two-run shot of his own to tie the ballgame in the sixth.
David Glaude (Québec City, QC) had the clutch RBI single in the top of the eighth inning that proved to be the winning run for Canada. The second baseman finished his day 1-for-4 at the plate.
Michael Brettell (Fonthill, ON) and RJ Freure (Burlington, ON) took care of the late innings for Team Canada combining for three innings of no earned runs and no hits en route to victory.
Canada will face host Aregentina on Saturday, June 17th at 2pm ET.
