Play Ball! – Baseball Canada Cup begins Wednesday
OTTAWA – After last year’s championship thriller, Team Ontario will be looking to defend their title when play commences Wednesday. Returning for a 24th consecutive year, the Baseball Canada Cup will be hosted in London, Ontario, and will feature the best 16 and 17 year old players that all 10 provinces have to offer.
“The Baseball Canada Cup Championship is the initial selection process for the Canadian Junior National Team, which brings along with it the best 17 and under baseball players that Canada has to offer,” said tournament chair Mike Lumley. “The tournament will feature future major league prospects, like former Canada Cup standout and current Toronto Blue Jay Brett Lawrie, who will lead Canada into the future of this sport.”
This event has proven to be successful in the past and should be no different this year in London. “The Canada Cup will be successful due to the hard work of all of our volunteers. They have put in countless hours to ensure that all the players, umpires and families have a fun and relaxing time here in London,” added Lumley.
If that wasn’t enough, the Gold Medal game will be played at Labatt Memorial Park, which was recently voted as Canada’s Favourite Ball Park. The tournament is divided in to two pools, A and B, which will determine which teams advance to the medal round. Pool A is comprised of Alberta, 2011 Bronze medalists British Columbia, Quebec and defending champion Ontario. Pool B consists of last year’s underdog silver medalists Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island, who will all look to advance to the medal round. Day 1 action kicks-off with seven match-ups that will see all ten provinces play at least one game.
