WNT Earns Tie in World Cup Exhibition

Maracay, Venezuela- In their only exhibition game before the start of the Women’s World Cup, the Women’s National Team played to a 9-9 tie with Venezuela.

"This was a good opportunity for most of our players to get their feet wet in preparation for our first game on Thursday,” said WNT Head Coach André Lachance (Ottawa, ON). “Obviously, this game was much needed after the week off we had.”

After the start of the game was delayed because of highway traffic the WNT jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the 4th inning.

Offensive stars for the WNT were Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) who went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) chipped in with 2 RBI while going 1 for 4 and Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) went 3 for 4.

Venezuela was eventually able to tie the game against the WNT who used five pitchers in the game.

“While we only allowed 5 hits, our defence was a bit shaky today as we did not make the routine plays,” explained Lachance.  “The first game blues are behind us now and we will use tomorrow’s practice to regroup and refocus in preparation for game 1."

Notes: The WNT will open the World Cup on August 12 against Australia at José A. Casanova Stadium in Caracas. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30pm ET. ...Fans can follow live action of the Women’s World Cup by visiting: http://ibaf.prod.kgroup.eu/en/competition-detail.aspx?id=a4406b7a-327d-4dbc-8b16-16198b57ccef
