DQ®13U National Western: Sask Five stays perfect

Ottawa, ON – The action continued on Friday with 8 more games involving Western Canada’s most talented young baseball players. Sask Five now stands as the only team to remain undefeated at the DQ® 13U National Western. Here’s a recap of the day’s games:

British Columbia 7 St. Albert (AB2) 2

Reliever Brady Fehlauer (Abbotsford, BC) earned the win for BC tossing 3 shutout innings and striking out 4. Rhees Moss (St. Albert, AB) was charged with the loss despite allowing 0 earned runs. The 6 that came across during his time on the mound were unearned. Aaron Vulcano (Surrey, BC) and Treyson Smith (Abbotsford, BC) picked up 2 RBIs each in the win.

Sask Five (SK1) 4 North Winnipeg (MB2) 2

Sask Five’s pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts over 7 innings while reliever Kael Flynn (Saskatoon, SK) was credited with the win. Flynn held the opposition to only 1 hit over 3 innings while fanning 5. Ethan Campbell (Warman, SK) went 2 for 2 with an RBI to contribute offensively. Dylan Duguay (Lockport, MB) picked up his second homerun of the tournament in the loss.

South Central (MB1) 12 Saskatoon 8

Starter Skylar Bruce (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win striking out 4 over 4 innings on the mound while allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk. Bruce contributed at the plate as well going 2 for 3 with 2 walks and coming across to score 3 times. Denton Mateychuk (Dominion City, MB) was perfect at the plate going 4 for 4 and driving in 3. Braxton Buckberger (Saskatoon, SK) went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a double in the loss.

Parkland (AB1) 15 Swift Current (SK2) 5

Kobe Laevens (Spruce Grove, AB) was lights out on the mound limiting the opposition to 1 run on 1 hit while striking out a whopping 7 batters over 3 innings. Dawson Schultz (Swift Current, SK) went 2 for 3 with a double, 2 stolen bases and 2 RBIs in the losing effort. Jacob Lovsin (Stony Plain, AB) and Travis Wagner (Stony Plain, AB) both homered for Parkland. Lovsin went 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs.

Sask Five (SK1) 3 British Columbia 2

Sask Five relied on a strong performance from starting pitcher Nolan Lindberg (Dalmeny, SK) to finish on top in this tight match-up. Lindberg tossed a complete 7 innings limiting BC to 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 4. Ethan Campbell (Warman, SK) drove in a run in the top of the 1st on a sac fly and later came across to score the winning run in the 6th inning. Treyson Smith (Abbotsford, BC) went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for BC.

North Winnipeg (MB2) 14 St. Albert (AB2) 3

North Winnipeg ran away with this one after a monstrous 10-run 6th inning highlighted by Zachary Evanochko’s 2-run home run. Evanochko went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and scored twice while teammates Liam Curtis (St. Andrews, MB) and Ryland Kuczek (St. Andrews, MB) homered as well. Starting pitcher Zaden Wake (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win going a complete 6 innings as he struck out 3 and limited the opposition to 3 runs.

Saskatoon 7 Swift Current (SK2) 6

Boston Buckberger (Saskatoon, SK) carried his team to victory thanks to a strong relief performance and a huge offensive contribution. Buckberger struck out 4 and held Swift Current to a single hit over 2 innings while going 2 for 4 at the plate and driving in 4 runs. Riley Girod (Corman Park, SK) and Rylan Hildebrand (Swift Current, SK) drove in 2 runs each in the loss.

South Central (MB1) 12 Parkland (AB1) 7

South Central came back from an early 6-1 deficit thanks to a collective offensive effort. 7 different players drove in runs for the winning squad, including Braeden Lewis (Virden, MB) who went 3 for 4 with a double. Caiden Kew (Spruce Grove, AB) was a bright spot for Parkland’s offense going 3 for 4 with an RBI. Christopher Peters (Rosenort, MB) earned the win for South Central after limiting the opposition to 1 run over 5.2 innings of relief work.
