El Diario: Junior National Team Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp

JUAN DOLIO, D.R. - The Junior National Team is back in action for the Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp from October 13-21, where they will face off with eleven different MLB professional academies in the Dominican Republic.

The ten-day camp will feature a workout at the Milwaukee Brewers DR Baseball Academy Complex, four single game days and four double headers, including games against the Angels, Cubs, Giants, Dodgers, Astros, Padres, Red Sox, Reds, Blue Jays, Pirates and Cardinals.

Junior National Team 1-3 Chicago Cubs DR
 
The Junior National Team dropped their final game of the Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp 3-1 against the Chicago Cubs DR.
 
The Junior National Team pitching staff finished off the camp strong with solid outings from Josiah Romeo (Caledon, ON), Geoffrey D’Amato (Milton, ON), Will Hynes (Mississauga, ON), and Adyn Schell (Toronto, ON). The staff combined to punch out nine batters in a short 7-inning game.


 
Mason Ault (Ancaster, ON) collected two of the three Junior National Team hits in the game, finishing his day with a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish. Anthony Clavet (Quebec City, QC) picked up the only other hit for the Canadians as he finished his day with a solid 1-for-3 from the clean-up spot.
 
The Junior National Team will be back in action in the new year for the annual Junior National Team Spring Training Camp.

 

Junior National Team 5-7 Pittsburgh Pirates DR
 
The Junior National Team lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates DR in a 7-5 thriller as the two squads exchange the in the late innings. 
 
The Canadians scored five runs on four hits against some explosive arms from the Pirates DR squad. They were held hitless through six innings, despite scoring a run in the fourth after a couple of walks led to a sacrifice fly.


 
Tate Carey (Windsor, ON) was the starter on the mound for the Juniors punching out two batters and permitting no hits in a short two inning outing. Ben Goodacre (Ancaster, ON) pitched two solid innings in relief, allowing only a hit and striking out two. 
 
The Junior National Team offence flipped the scoreboard in the top of the seventh after Brayden Ricketts (Brampton, ON), Quinn Carson (Oakville, ON), and Gianluca Montanaro (Aurora, ON) all picked up RBI singles to give the Juniors a 5-4 lead at the time. 

Aiden Taggart (Grimsby, ON) worked the last three innings on the bump, allowing three runs on only three hits and striking out three as the Juniors couldn’t hang on to the lead late in the ballgame.

 

Junior National Team 2-3 Toronto Blue Jays DR
 
The Junior National Team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in extra innings against the Toronto Blue Jays DR team.
 
Jacob Wallace (Pincourt, QC) was the starter for the Junior National Team working five outstanding innings, allowing only a pair of hits while striking out four.


 
The Canadians were hitless until the top of the fourth inning when Carter Cathers (Nanaimo, BC) smashed a one out double to right field. 
 
The Juniors would tie the ballgame in the sixth thanks to a defensive miscue that allowed Dante Smith (Ajax, ON) to come around and score. The Blue Jays DR squad would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half to re-take a 2-1 lead at the time.


 
The Juniors forced extra innings after tying the game at two apiece in the top of the eighth, as an error allowed Simon Baker (Cochrane, AB) to score after an Anthony Clavet (Quebec City, QC) single to centre field. 
 
Merek Yeager (Muenster, SK) had a strong appearance in relief, despite picking up the loss in the ballgame. The right hander limited the jays to two runs, only one of them earned, on five hits while punching out five.

 

Junior National Team 5-9 Texas Rangers DR

The Junior National Team fell to the Texas Rangers DR squad 9-5 in the second game of the double-header.

The Canadians got the scoring started thanks to an Anthony Clavet (Quebec City, QC) 2-run blast to capture an early 2-0 lead.

The Rangers would answer back with runs in the first four innings of the game, gaining a comfortable 5-2 lead heading into the middle innings.

Sean Duncan (Langley, BC) battled for the Juniors in relief, giving up three earned runs on eight hits still while punching out five.

Dante Smith (Ajax, ON) smashed an RBI triple in the top of the ninth, finishing his day with two runs scored and a stolen base.

 

Junior National Team 1-5 Boston Red Sox DR

The Junior National Team took a 5-1 loss against the Boston Red Sox DR team to start off the last double-header of the Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp.

The Canadians only pushed one run across despite collecting eight hits against the Red Sox DR pitching staff.  

Ryan Press (Toronto, ON) was the starter on the mound for the Juniors giving up three runs, only one of them earned, on five hits while striking out four over his two and two third innings of work.

The Junior National Team offence responded with a run of their own in the top half of the third inning, sparked by a Quinn Carson (Oakville, ON) triple to lead-off the inning.

Michael Yusypchuk (Edmonton, AB) was outstanding out of the bullpen, providing the Canadians with four solid innings in relief, as the right hander allowed only one run, on eight hits while punching out six.

Maxime Boies (Levis, QC) finished the day with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, picking up the only RBI in the game for the Juniors.

 

Junior National Team 4-2 San Diego Padres DR

The Junior National Team won their first game of the Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp 4-2 against the San Diego Padres DR.

Leo Cote (Sainte-Catherine-De-Heatley, QC) gave the Juniors the early lead in the top of the first with a two-run double that scored Dante Smith (Ajax, ON) and Simon Baker (Cochrane, AB) to put some early pressure on their opponents.

Will Hynes (Mississauga, ON) was the starter on the mound for the Juniors, working three innings of one run ball on three hits and one strikeout. Hynes’ outing was followed by a fantastic 4-inning relief appearance by Geoffrey D’Amato (Milton, ON) who gave up only two hits while racking up nine punchouts.

The Canadians would add to their lead in the top of the seventh with an Anthony Clavet (Quebec City, QC) RBI triple, securing a 4-1 lead at the time.

Adyn Schell (Toronto, ON) allowed a run on two hits and punched out one over his two inning closing appearance to give the Juniors their first victory of the camp.

 

Junior National Team 1-4 Houston Astros DR
 
The Junior National Team is still looking for their first victory of the Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp as they lost to the Houston Astros DR team 4-1. 
 
The Canadians could only drive one run across despite collecting five hits against the opposing Astros DR pitchers.
 
Mark Rogers (Cambridge, ON) was the starter on the mound for the Junior National Team producing one of the best outings of the camp so far. The left-hander worked five scoreless innings, permitting only three hits while striking out two.


 
Simon Baker (Cochrane, AB) continues to swing a hot bat this fall, picking up a pair of hits over his three at bats out of the leadoff spot. Eric Hartman (St. Albert, AB) picked up a hit and the only RBI for the Juniors via a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh.

 

Junior National Team 3-4 Los Angeles Dodgers DR
 
The Junior national Team lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers DR squad 4-3 in the first game of doubleheader action.
 
Leo Cote (Sainte-Catherine-De-Hatley, QC) gave the Juniors the early lead in the top of the first with an RBI double to get the scoring started. Cote collected two out of the three JNT hits in the game over his 2-for-4 performance.


 
Quinn Carson (Oakville, ON) delivered the only other hit for the Juniors as he dispatched a solo home run in the top of the second inning to tie the ballgame at two runs apiece.
 
The Canadian offence was backed up by strong outings from Josiah Romeo (Cambridge, ON) and Aiden Taggart (Grimsby, ON) who limited the Dodgers DR team to four runs, only two of them earned, while combining for ten strikeouts in the game.  


 
A late rally was sparked after Dante Smith (Ajax, ON) walked and later came around to score to make it a one run game in ninth before the comeback came up just short.

 

Junior National Team 5-7 San Fransisco Giants DR

The Junior National Team fell to the San Francisco Giants DR 7-5 in their second game of doubleheader action on Sunday.

The Juniors continued to swing hot bats, scoring five runs on eight hits as they came just short of a couple of victories in the day.

Anthony Clavet (Quebec City, QC) got the Juniors on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single after Eric Hartman (St. Albert, AB) had singled earlier in the inning.

Simon Baker (Cochrane, AB) led the offence for the Canadians collecting two RBI's over his 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Esteban Dessureault (Trois-Riviéres, QC) was also a key contributor with a perfect 1-for-1 day at the dish with three walks, an RBI and a run scored. 

Jacob Wallace (Pincourt, QC) battled on the mound for the Juniors permitting two earned runs on three hits and striking out one over his four innings of work. Geoffrey D'Amato (Milton, ON) had a perfect inning in relief striking out a batter. Will Hynes (Mississauga, ON) picked up the bottom half of the eighth, permitting only one hit and striking out one.

 

Junior National Team 5-6 Chicago Cubs DR
The Junior National Team lost to the Chicago Cubs DR 6-5 in a back and forth affair that was decided in the late innings. 

Canada was hot out ofthe gate scoring a couple runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead capped by a William Polanco (Laval, QC) RBI double.

 

The Canadians would keep their lead until the fifth inning when the Cubs scored a pair of runs to take a 5-4 lead.

Brayden Ricketts (Brampton, ON) would deliver a big blow in the top of the seventh, smashing the first home run of the Junior National Team’s Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp. Ricketts would finish the day 2-for-3 at the plate with both of his hits being for extra bases. 

Dante Smith (Ajax, ON) also had a good day at the dish, collecting a pair of hits in four at bats and scoring a run in the leadoff spot while Tim Piasentin (Coquitlam, BC) and Carter Cathers (Nanaimo, BC) both tripled in three at bats.

Tate Carey (Windsor, ON) was the starter for the Juniors permitting a couple of runs on three hits while striking out three over his three innings of work. Shane Brinham (North Vancouver, BC) was the first in relief, working two and a third innings and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out five. Merek Yeager (Muenster, SK) finished the game on the mound for the Canadians, working two solid innings of one run ball on five hits and fanning one batter.

 

Junior National Team 4-7 Los Angeles Angels DR

The Junior National Team dropped their first game of the Dominican Fall Instructional League Camp against the Los Angeles Angels DR squad, 7-4.

The Juniors scored four runs on six hits and committed an error in the ballgame. A fielder’s choice, with Nathan Flewelling (Red Deer, AB) at the plate would give the JNT an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Angels would answer back scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half to take the lead.

Sean Duncan (Langley, BC) was the starter on the mound for the Canadians working three innings and allowing three hits while collecting three strikeouts. Michael Yusypchuk (Edmonton, AB) also had a good outing on the hill, giving up a run on two hits and striking out three. 

The Juniors offence would come back to life in the top of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to shorten the Angels lead to 6-4. The offensive effort was capped by an Owen Gregg (Oakville, ON) RBI triple.

The Angels would answer back with a run of their own in the bottom half to round out the scoring.
